Neuroprotective Developmental Care (NDC)

Neuroprotective Developmental Care (NDC)

Neuroprotective Developmental Care (NDC) or the ‘Possums Program” offers evidence-based support for breastfeeding, sleep, unsettled baby behaviour and parent mood.

Unlike other approaches to early life care, Possums uniquely acknowledges the interrelatedness of breastfeeding, sleep, baby’s sensory-motor and social needs, and cry-fuss behaviours – and how each impact upon parent mood.

What can NDC consultations help with?

Breastfeeding

Possums approach to breastfeeding is called Gestalt breastfeeding. The word gestalt (pronounced “ger-shtolt”) means a whole that is more than the sum of its parts. Gestalt breastfeeding integrates the theoretical frames of complexity science and physiologic breastfeeding initiation (Schafer & Watson Genna, 2015) with new understandings of the biomechanics of infant suck elucidated in ultrasound studies (Douglas & Geddes, 2017; Geddes & Sakalidis, 2016)

Gestalt breastfeeding helps with:

  • Nipple damage or pain
  • Difficulty latching onto the breast
  • Fussing and pulling off the breast
  • Back-arching at the breast
  • Marathon feeds
  • Excessively frequent breastfeeds
  • ‘Windy’ behaviour during or after breastfeeds
  • Poor weight gain*

Infant Sleep

The NDC approach to infant sleep works with your baby’s biology, not against it. It has been developed with neuroscience, psychological attachment, third wave behaviourism, lactation science and adult sleep science. The aim is to re-set your little one’s sleep patterns so that sleep feels relaxed and reduce excessive night waking. It protects the mother baby bond and aids secure attachment.

It is not a ‘controlled crying’ approach.

The Possums sleep program works with your child’s biology, not against it. This is the original, genuinely evidence-based alternative to sleep training, offered to parents since 2011 and shown to work in various university studies.

The program helps you re-set your little one’s sleep patterns so that sleep is easy and the nights manageable, without excessive waking. We share with you our ground-breaking approach to your child’s environmental and sensory needs, based on the latest neuroscience – and so essential for healthy sleep.

We protect your emotional bond with your baby and your baby’s secure attachment. Click here to read an international news report about our gentle but effective approach.

Maternal Mental Health

The transition to motherhood can be accompanied by great joy, and also great challenge.  It is not uncommon to experience a variety of mental health struggles during pregnancy and the early months and years of parenthood. NDC has a large focus on maternal mental health by guiding you through a therapy called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This approach normalises difficult thoughts and feelings, helps you discover your values as a parent, encouraging self-compassion, cognitive diffusion and committed action. Evidence has shown an improved parental adjustment when ACT strategies have been implemented.

Cry Fuss Behaviour

Unsettled infant behaviour is one of the most common presentations in early life, affecting 20% of infants. The first 16 weeks is a particularly sensitive period neurologically, after which crying and fussing typically settles. There is usually a lot that can be done to make the days and nights more enjoyable. The strategies, also referred to as Neuroprotective Developmental Care will encompass gut, feeding, sleep, and sensory needs. These strategies encourage cued care to supporting you to respond to your baby’s needs. Existing evaluations of NDC are positive, showing halved crying and fussing, substantially improved maternal mood, and improved sleep.
